But before proceeding on what to use for your fly fishing tippet adventure and most importantly what is a tippet in the first place?

To start with, a tippet is an undersized piece of monofilament that is lesser in diameter than the extensive section of the leader; and using a double surgeon's knot attached it to the leader. Take note that the diameter of the tippet material should match the size of the fly that you are using.

The next thing to learn is how to assemble your fly fishing tippet, below are the simple steps to do it:

—  Make sure first that you have your leader attached to your fly line, and then using the surgeon's knot tie your tippet to the end of the leader. 

—  Get your piece of tippet and place it next to the end of your leader, place or lay it side by side with each other and let it overlie one another by 4 to 6 inches in measurement. 

—  Secure an overhand knot in the portion where the two pieces are in twofold. To accomplish this, join the lines all together combining it and making it into a single line which will form a loop after joining both lines. 

—  Then bring the whole end of the leader and of the tippet through the loop by doing it at the same time. However do not pull the loop too tight, just leave it open.

—  Bring the doubled portion and the double the overhand knot as well, and then once more bring both of it through the loop you've made.

—  Hold and pull on the ends of the tippet by pulling it firmly and steadily to tighten up the surgeon's knot.

—  Clip the loose end part of the line that was used to tie a knot of the leader and the tippet which is near to the knot, giving a little space for movement. Allowing the knot to move when in use without falling apart.

There, your fly fishing tippet is ready for its biggest challenge and that is for you to be able to catch a big fish with it.
